What are peptides?

Almost everyone is talking about them or taking them.

You already know at least a couple- insulin and the GLP-1 medications for weight loss!

Peptides are short chains of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins). Some are FDA-approved medications with proven benefits (for example, as mentioned above, insulin, tesamorelin for HIV-related fat changes, and GLP-1 medications for diabetes and weight loss). Many others being sold today — often online or through wellness and “anti-aging” clinics — are not approved and have not been proven safe or effective in people.

Common peptides marketed directly to patients

You may have seen these advertised for healing injuries, building muscle, “anti-aging,” or boosting performance:

  • BPC-157
  • TB-500 / thymosin beta-4
  • CJC-1295 and ipamorelin
  • Sermorelin
  • AOD-9604
  • GHK-Cu (copper peptide)

Despite bold marketing claims, most of these have only been tested in animals or laboratory studies. There is very little or no reliable human evidence that they work, and the correct dose, frequency, and length of treatment are simply unknown.

Why should you be concerned if a supplement is” unapproved”?

  • Unknown safety. Without human trials, serious side effects may not be recognized. Reported problems with some of these peptides include hormone imbalances, changes in blood sugar, fluid retention, joint and muscle aches, and injection-site reactions.
  • Product quality is not guaranteed. Peptides sold as “research chemicals” or “not for human use” are not checked by the FDA. What is in the vial may differ from the label, may be contaminated, or may be incorrectly dosed.
  • Theoretical long-term risks. Some peptides stimulate cell growth, which raises unproven but biologically plausible concerns about effects on abnormal or cancerous cells.
  • Sports consequences. Several of these peptides are banned substances and can cause a competitive athlete to fail a drug test.

Questions worth asking before starting any peptide

  • Is this peptide FDA-approved for my condition?
  • What human studies show it actually works and is safe?
  • What are the possible side effects and long-term risks?
  • Where is the product made, and how is its quality verified?
  • Are there proven treatments I should try first?

How are approved peptide medications used?

Approved peptide drugs are usually given by injection (under the skin, into a vein, or into muscle) because stomach acid breaks them down if swallowed. They often need careful storage (for example, refrigeration) and specific handling.

The bottom line

Peptides are a growing area of medicine, but “peptide therapy” sold outside of FDA approval is a very different thing. If you are considering or currently using any peptide, tell your healthcare provider — including anything bought online — so your care can be coordinated and your safety monitored. Do not rely on social media testimonials or clinic advertising as proof that a product is safe or effective.
